Nyenrode and TU Delft combine business and IT studies Improving the match between supply and demand in the education marketNyenrode Business Universiteit and TU Delft (Top Tech) are combining business and IT studies. They are the first in Europe to introduce an Executive Master in Business Administration (Executive MBA) in Business and IT. The partnership between the universities is interesting because Nyenrode has built its reputation in business and management, while TU Delft is well known for its technical education. As a professional group, European Chief Information Officers (CIOs) have strongly expressed a need for such a course and therefore the program has been developed together with the CIO community. The program was mainly set up because of the mismatch between supply and demand in the European education market. IT-oriented courses are often highly technical, while companies call for more business-oriented IT skills. On the other hand, many MBA programs devote too little attention to IT. This mismatch had already been identified by the European Commission in 2008 as the most important factor delaying the implementation of the e-skills element of the Lisbon Agenda. This is intended to help Europe catch up with the rest of the world in terms of IT knowledge, and so deliver benefits in areas such as competitiveness, growth and employment. In particular the EC wants to see Europe make good its shortfall against Asia and the USA in the application of IT in business. The program consists of separate modules. This allows participants to select the components that interest them most. The ‘executive modular MBA in Business and IT’ will start in October 2010 with two modules in the Netherlands. After that, the program will be offered with additional modules in other European business schools and universities. The development of the course has been greeted with great enthusiasm among CIOs in the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe as they have been calling for a course of this type for many years now. “There is still too little awareness that most of today’s business is primarily driven by IT”, says Hennie Wesseling, chairman of the Netherlands CIO Platform and one of the program’s supporters.
